The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) is one of the crucial energy-environmental economics research fields, which has been attracted by numerous academics and researchers for the last three decades. EKC-related studies started with Simon Kuznets (1955) who examined the relationship between income inequality and economic growth.

This study examines to what extent the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis may be valid and applicable for Turkey. In the present paper, we employ a smooth transition regression (STR) model to test validity of the EKC hypothesis, using a dataset of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission per capita and GDP per capita over the period of 1971–2014.
